Kyle Soder scored on a 2 on 1 late in the third period to break a 1-1 tie as the North Bay Skyhawks went on to defeat the Seguin Bruins 3-1 at Memorial Gardens on Sunday night.

The Campbell, California product used his teammate as a decoy and went high into top shelf with a perfect snap shot over the shoulder of Bruins goalie Lincoln Brady to break the tie.

Tyler Hummel would add the insurance marker on the power play just over a minute later. The goal came with former North Bay Trapper Josh McCully serving a roughing infraction for the Bruins.

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds draft pick Jordan Carroll scored the other goal for the Skyhawks.

Dave Williams scored the lone goal for the Bruins.

Skyhawks head coach Darren Turcotte was impressed with the performance, which — in his opinion — is making the cutting process extremely difficult.

“It’s tough for coaching staff when you know you have 8 or 9 guys that are on the shelf right now,” Turcotte said about a group fighting for only a few final spots on the roster.

“We sat back to see who would step up and now we have some decisions to make,” he said.

Turcotte adds that the training camp has been hard on the players both mentally and physically. He says the team will take Monday off and by mid-week they will make their final cuts prior to Thursday’s contest at Memorial Gardens against the Aurora Tigers which will be the team’s final pre-season game.

That cutting process will include the goaltending battle. Incumbent Ian Wilson likely has his job locked up but the battle between Roch Charbonneau, Andre Laperriere and Shea Cooper has been a good one.

“We want to make sure we make right decision with goaltending,” said Turcotte.

“It’s the most important position on the ice so if you make a mistake now it could haunt you later on in the season so we want to continue to analyze that whole scenario and hopefully we are hoping Tuesday or Wednesday make a decision after that."
