Lamothe and Conway win Vaughan Invitational

VAUGHAN, ON - A total of 19 members of the Apollo Gymnastics Club attended the Vaughan Gymnastics 18th Annual Invitational competition last weekend.

Six members of Apollo Gymnastics men's artistic team competed on Friday alongside gyms from York, New Market, Markham, Richmond Hill, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Woolwich, Thunder Bay and Ajax.

David Conway, 11, won gold on 4 of the 6 events. He finished the competition at the top of the podium with the all-around gold in the Interclub 2 division.

Sam Aubut, 11, and Addison Hunt, 9, competed in the Interclub 2 category. Sam won 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 Bronze medal. Hunt earned 3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. Aubut and Hunt finished 2nd place overall in their respective age divisions.

Jack Chadbourne and Gaudet competed in the Interclub 3 category. Chadbourne was 3rd overall, picking up 3 silver medals and 2 bronze along the way. Gaudet finished the day with 4 5th place ribbons and 2 bronze medals on the parallel bars and high bar. Zacharie finished 5th overall.

Domenic Viczian, 11, competed in the Interclub 1 category. This was the second competition Domenic had ever competed at. Domenic finished the day with 2 Silver Medals and a 4th place finish on the parallel bars. He finished 6th place overall.

"I am very proud of how the guys did this weekend," said Men’s Head Coach Matt Millar.

"This was definitely a step up in competition for them with some of the bigger southern Ontario gyms in attendance."

Apollo had 13 athletes participate in the women’s portion of the competition which took place on Saturday and Sunday.

Rylee Lamothe was the all-around winner in the level 4, age 14+ division. She was the gold medalist on the balance beam and also earned silver on vault and a bronze on floor.

Carly Gagne and Taylor Vaillancourt were 3rd over-all in their respective categories. Gagne won silver on vault and a bronze on bars, finishing with a bronze in the level 3 age 10 division. Vaillancourt, competing in the level 5 age 10 category, was the silver medalist on beam and earned a bronze on vault, bars and all-around.

Silver medalists during the competition included Meagan Hester for her performance on vault and floor and Emma McArthur for her expressive floor routine. Joy Simola captured a bronze medal on floor.

Zoey Polhill, Sydney Knight, Trista Hester and Alexiss Meecham narrowly missed medal contention. Polhill was ranked 4th on vault and in the all-around level 2 age 10 division. . Knight placed 4th on bars, beam and floor, Hester was 4th on bars and Meecham was 4th on floor.

In the level 3 division, Angela Green was 5th on vault and beam and Christina Goode placed 5th on vault.

Mackechnie Chadbourne finished 6th on the balance beam, in the level 5, age 14+ category, after an uncharacteristic fall bumped her from silver medal contention.

The entire gymnastics team will compete at the Sunshine Classic in North Bay this upcoming weekend.
