The Nipissing University Lakers men’s and women’s cross country teams completed their regular season with some solid performances under very windy and wet conditions at the Queen’s University open in Kingston.

Despite losing Jon Pratt, the Lakers leading runner this season who was unable to complete the race, sophomore Andrew Bubar lead the team over the undulating 10km course to a seventh place finish, placing 51st in a time of 39.04.

“It was definitely weather only a duck could appreciate,” said Andrew Bubar. “I think everyone lost probably 90 seconds to two minutes out there today. But it was fun, the way cross country is supposed to be.”

Jason English finished in 53rd with a time of 40.19, followed by Cameron Hodgins in 56th place in 41.22. Graham Henderson making his Laker debut placed 58th in 43.49 with Salman Khan next in 61st in 46.56, followed by Dave Cartagena in 62nd in 47.13 and James Cameron in 63rd with 54.59. Veteran Tim Feick also withdrew from the race after re-aggravating a knee injury.

The Lady Lakers managed to produce a steady string of solid performances while missing top guns Jenn Litt and Ashleigh McGuinty.

Denise Dietrich lead the way in a time of 24.24 (70th) followed by Jill Edmunds in 25.28 (72nd), Kathleen Crawford 25.51 (73rd). Shelia Merkley in her debut as a Laker was not fazed by the weather and placed a respectable 76th in 27.12.

The Lady Lakers team finished in 12th place.

The team’s next race will be the Ontario University cross country championships Oct. 30 in Toronto
