The Nipissing University Lady Lakers have been named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Team of the Week while Megan Stacey received the player of the week honours.

The Lady Lakers came off a strong weekend performance defeating the West Division leading Fanshawe Falcons 3-1 and the previously undefeated Central Division leading Humber Hawks 3-1. The Lakers have been on roll wining seven matches in a row since losing to Humber in November. The Lakers are ranked 2nd in the province behind Sudbury’s Cambrian College and are ranked 15th in the province.

“We are getting better with every practice,” said head coach Jeffries. “I believe that we have not played our best volleyball yet. The girls keep pushing themselves and every player in continually improving.”

Megan Stacey was awarded the player of the week after a tremendous weekend performance in which she scored a total of 47 points in two matches. Stacey had 19 kills, a block and an ace against Fanshawe and 22 kills and four blocks against Humber. Stacey is on pace to break her total points in a season record (301) and is in range to break the most kills in a year mark set by Claire Bramma during the 1999-2000 season.

The Lady Lakers have one regular season match remaining against division rival the Mohawk Mountaineers. The Lakers have secured second place in the Central-West division and will be looking to finish on a strong note. The Lakers will be hosting a cross-over match with the 3rd seed in the East division February 19 and on the line is a berth to the OCAA championships hosted by Nipissing University Feb. 24-26.

The Lakers face Mohawk Feb 13 at 12 pm followed by the men at 2 pm.
