Lakers hold off Gaels surge for first playoff win

Lakers move on to quarter-finals where they will face the Ryerson Rams.

Justin Shaver had 17 points off the bench as the Nipissing Lakers held off a Gaels fourth quarter surge in a 77-74 win for the Lakers varsity men’s basketball team’s first ever playoff victory on Wednesday night at the  

The Lakers had a solid first half building a 43-27 lead at halftime.  However, the Gaels came back hard in the fourth quarter outscoring the home side 26-9, but the Lakers were still able to hold on for the playoff win.   

Jaaden Lewis came off the bench as well and contributed 15 points while veteran Marcus Lewis drained 12 points.  

Gaels Suhkpreet Singh led all scorers in the game with 31 points.   

The win propels the Lakers (6th seed) into the quarter-finals where they will travel to Ryerson to face the #3 seeded Rams.  That game will take place on Saturday, February 25th at the Mattamy Centre. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
