The Nipissing Lakers continue to surprise in their opening season in the OUA as they won their third straight as they defeated the Ryerson Rams at the George Bell arena in Toronto on Saturday afteroon.

Justin Villeneuve, Matt Lahey, Andrew Marcoux, Marcus Pryde scored while Dan Watt sealed the win with an empty netter in the final minute of play.

However, turning point in this contest likely came in the third period, scored tied 2-2,when Matt Lahey was given a penalty shot which appeared to by Ryerson goalie Louie George between the legs but the officials said it was no goal.

That didn't frustrate the Lakers instead head coach Mike McParland believes it fired up his club and shortly after the missed penalty shot Lahey scored a power play marker for a 3-2 lead.

The win is huge for the Lakers who now sit on top of the OUA standings; one point ahead of the 3-0 UQTR Patriotes.

"We did make a statement today," said McParland.

"We are the only top team playing and after 5 games for Nipissing to be in first place is great, however we won’t sneak up on anybody now."

Matt Schmermund had both goals for the Rams.

Kyle Cantlon stopped 32 shots for his third win of the young season.
