OSHAWA, ON - The Lady Lakers began the 2007 season on a winning note by capturing gold at the Durham College (DC) Killer Instinct Women’s Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Lakers defeated the defending Ontario College Athletic Association champions 2-0 to capture their third tournament title of the season.

Considered to be one of the most competitive tournaments of the year the DC Cup featured the top teams from all four divisions.

In pool play the Lady Lakers swept St.Clair, Durham, Canadore and Niagara 2-0 with the only hiccup of the tournament coming at the hands of Mohawk who defeated the Lakers 2-0. The Lakers finished 2nd in pool play and faced the Fanshawe Falcons in the semi-finals. The Lakers defeated Fanshawe 2-0 to advance to the finals.

“Overall we played a strong tournament,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle.

“We had an opportunity to use all of our players throughout the weekend and some players really took advantage. We made some adjustments on our defense and blocking and it really showed this weekend. Our team defense was the best it’s been all year.”

Left side player Tara Preeper was named a tournament all star while middle blocker Megan Stacey was named tournament MVP.

The Lady Lakers traveled to Calgary over the Christmas break and finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. The Lady Lakers struggled the first day of the tournament losing to Brandon University 2-1 and Sherbrook 2-1 while they defeated Medicine Hat 2-0.

“It was unfortunate but we had one bad day in Calgary and it determined our tournament faith. We will learn from the experience and use it as motivation to pursue our goals.”

The Lady Lakers will be back in action on January 18th as they host the Sault College Cougars beginning at 8 p.m. at the Robert J Surtees Athletics Centre.
