Melissa Ladouceur, the reigning Canadian weightlifting champion in the 48 kilo class, was held off the scoresheet at the recent International Weightlifting Federation’s University Cup in Villeneuve-Loubert France when she failed to make her body weight. The 18 year old Canadore student registered 48.1 on the scale at the weigh-in deadline. At world level contests athletes are not allowed to enter higher divisions, but Ladouceur was allowed to lift as a guest. Her eventual total of 123, 10 kilos off her best, would have placed her fourth in the 48 kilo class.

Later in the competition, former North Bay Norsemen, Buck Ramsay placed 9th overall in the 85 kilo men’s weight class. Ramsay, who studies at the U of Toronto, totaled 297 kilos, by way of 131 in the snatch and 166 in the clean and jerk.

One more local lifter will take to the international platform this summer. Daralynn D’Angelo, the current Canadian Master champion at 58 kilos, will lift in the World Masters Games. The Games are being held in Edmonton July 22 to 31. D’angelo’s division is scheduled to compete on Saturday, July 23.
