Kaitlin Smith wins pre-novice ladies championship

Seven North Bay Figure Skating Club members participated in the 2006 BMO Financial Group Skate Canada-Northern Ontario Sectional Championships in Sudbury this weekend.

Seven North Bay Figure Skating Club members participated in the 2006 BMO Financial Group Skate Canada-Northern Ontario Sectional Championships in Sudbury this weekend.

The Sectional Championships are the first qualifying event on the road to the National and Provincial events. Kaitlin Smith was the Gold medalist in the PreNovice Ladies event winning both the Short Program and Freeskate event with a personal best score of 55.87 overall. Chad Mathieu skated Short Program and Freeskate exhibition performances in the Junior Men’s category at the Sectional Championships and earned a personal best score of 103.02 overall. Smith and Mathieu have qualified from the Sectionals Championships and will be on the Skate Canada-Northern Ontario team and will compete at the Skate Canada-Western Challenge event being held December 1st- 4th in Mississauga; the next event on the road to the Junior National Championships and Canadian Championships.

Smith and Mathieu are coached by Debbie Cottrill-Olivier and Sharon Lajeunesse at the North Bay Figure Skating Club.

Erin Bros and Beaulieu have earned spots on the Skate Canada-Northern Ontario team for the Ontario Winter Games being held in March in Barrie, ON. Bros place 5th in the Novice Ladies event and Beaulieu placed 7th in the PreNovice Ladies event. Bros is coached by Cottrill-Olivier and Beaulieu is coached by Lajeunesse. North Bay’s Alice Graham and her partner Andrew Poje (Kitchener-Waterloo FSC) will advance directly in Senior Ice Dance to the Canadian Championships being held in Ottawa, ON January 9th-15th. Graham and Poje are coached by Paul McIntosh at the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club.
