Junior Barons remain unbeaten

The Algonquin Barons improved their record to 2-0 with a 33-16 victory over the Northern Braves this afternoon in NDA junior football action. After a Barons fumble on the Northern goal-line, the Braves used a solid running attack to march downfield.

After a Barons fumble on the Northern goal-line, the Braves used a solid running attack to march downfield. The drive culminated in a Sam Levac touchdown. Alex Piquette added the two-point convert to make it 8-0 Braves.
The Barons then capitalized on a shortened field due to a blocked punt as fullback Junior Gauthier rumbled into the end zone from 10 yards out. Barons quarterback Nick Shank added the two-point convert to even the score at 8-8.

In the second, tailback Eric Joly found the end zone as the Barons took advantage of a failed Northern 4th down gamble. Kicker Jean-Michel Paulin added the convert to make 15-8 Algonquin heading into half time.

Early in the third, Joly found the end zone once again to make it 21-8 Barons. Shortly thereafter, Barons defensive end Éric Huard intercepted the ball and ran it back for the major making it 27-8 Barons. In the fourth, Northern once again marched downfield, a drive which culminated in a Mathew St-Onge touchdown run from a few yards out. Slotback Sam Levac added the two-point convert to make it 27-16 Barons. On the ensuing drive, Algonquin tailback Mat Lavigne ran 40 yards to the Braves’ 15-yard line.

Barons quarterback Nick Shank then hooked up with tight end Miguel Champagne for the major, putting the game out of reach for the Braves.
