Sixty years ago on January 4th, 1947 the North Bay Figure Skating Club was incorporated and that was the beginning of North Bay’s love of the sport and skating. When the NBFSC started out it was sanctioned by the national governing body for figure skating in Canada the Canadian Figure Skating Association, which is now known as Skate Canada. The NBFSC is still proudly running all of its programs and events sanctioned by Skate Canada and Skate Canada Northern Ontario. The North Bay Figure Skating Club moved into the Memorial Gardens when it was built in the mid 1950’s which is still the home of the Club’s skating programs and where the NBFSC office is located.

The NBFSC is run entirely by volunteers and many skaters move on to become judges, evaluators, officials and coaches. Skaters, parents, grandparents and friends of skating give back to the sport by becoming volunteers and board members who are the life blood of the Club, without these wonderful volunteers the club could not exist. All of these volunteers also help to host special events including the bi-annual Club Ice Show. The NBFSC has been host to the Skate Canada Northern Ontario Sectional Championships several times and will host the 2008 Sectional Championships in November 2007 at the Gardens. For the past 4 decades the NBFSC has hosted the popular invitational Make it a Date to Skate competition in the spring where hundreds of skaters gather from across Ontario to compete from the beginner level right up to the Senior Competitive level. This event also gives skaters an opportunity to try Skate Canada tests while competing. The 38th Annual event is scheduled for March 9, 10, and 11th at the Memorial Gardens.

The NBFSC runs programs every season of the year including a Summer Program in July. The only time off for the skating club and its volunteers is during late May and June when North Bay is without ice in all of the arenas, but even then there is much work to be done behind the scenes planning for the upcoming seasons.

The club has seen many changes over the past sixty years but the one thing that remains constant is the Club’s skaters, volunteers and coaches passion for the sport and being able to give the North Bay community a chance to learn to skate and give the opportunities for skaters to progress.

The NBFSC provides quality skating programs to persons of all ages and ability. The dedication of the coaches, skaters and volunteers provides an enjoyable club experience. The NBFSC encourages fitness and the development of skating skills through the participation of members, family and the Board of Directors.
