The North Bay Sports Hall of Fame website, www.northbaysportshalloffame.ca, has been up and running since April of this year and representatives from several sports organization turned out Tuesday, at the hall, located at Memorial Gardens, for an informal information night.

For 25 years, the achievements of local athletes and sport builders in the community have been recognized in the NBSHF.

“At this time, the board of directors would like to take this opportunity to share with the community the historical information accumulated and partner with all sporting groups and association in the area in its future development.” Hall chairman Bill Jacko said.

“We hope the public will visit the site. We also welcome input regarding the nomination an d selection and processes.”

The web site was made live April 12, entering the hall’s first foray into the electronic age.

Jacko announced the launch of the website at the 25th annual induction and awards night in April 16. Since that time work has been on going to correct some start up glitches, update records, make some necessary format changes and to make the web site as user friendly as possible.

Work on the website started several years ago under the direction of board member Barb Olmsted and the Widdifield Secondary School Computer Club. Since that time, Peter Handley Jr., creative director of PHD creative of Ottawa, has volunteered a tremendous amount of time to get the NBSHF web site to where it is today. Board members Peter Handley Sr. and Brent Pigott handled most of the data input from the North Bay end of things.

Visitors to the site will be able to search the archive of over 200 local sports figures inducted into the hall since its inception in 1977.

Also included is a listing of the many individuals and teams who have been presented awards annually at the induction Dinner. These include DIA Sports Achievement Award, Mike Mitchell/ Larry Avery Memorial Trophy, Judge Harry J. Reynolds Memorial Trophy, Pete Handley Friend of Sport Award, James Kelly Memorial Award, Al Brennan Memorial Trophy, George Martyn Memorial Trophy, Peter Palangio Memorial Award, Al Knapp Memorial Trophy, Britt Jessup Memorial Trophy and NBSHF Team Recognition Award.
The North Bay Sports Awards Committee, with the exception of the Mitchell/Avery and Pete Handley Awards, selects the winners.

Those individuals and teams, who were chosen as the ‘Best of 75’ during the City of North Bay’s 75th anniversary celebration are also listed in the awards section. Photos from the previous annual induction dinner will be posted with other pertinent details about the next event announced as they become available.

A brief history of the NBSHF is given on the site with the Memorial Gardens Sports Arena being the home of the hall since day one back in 1977. Visitors to the hall, located on the ground floor at the north end of the Gardens, will find the walls decorated with photos and biographies of the over 200 inductees. There are also three showcases of North Bay sport artifacts that have been collected over the years on display.
