The Eurocamp Novice 'AAA' Summer Stars team were runners-up at the CCHA’s prestigious Canada’s Wonderland International Pre-season Hockey Tournament last weekend. The tournament is considered to be Canada’s leader in international youth hockey tournaments, attracting some of the best young players in Canada, USA and Europe. The Eurocamp Stars with players from Ottawa and North Bay faced several teams from Northeastern North America in pool play to place 2nd in their pool. The team defeated Long Island, New York 4-3 in their quarter-final match, advancing to a semi-final match against Toronto’s top spring/summer hockey team, the Toronto Bulldogs.

The Bulldog roster boasts many young players from the Toronto Marlie’s winter hockey program, who have developed players like NHL stars Jason Spezza and Rick Nash. With the help of local players Dylan Bond, Lucas Edmonds, Eric Mondoux and Gavin Shaw, the Eurocamp Stars upset the nearly undefeated Bulldog team 3-2.

In the championship game the Stars played a strong game with tie score to the end of the second period, but eventually lost 10-5 to the American Gladiators, coached by NHLer Nick Antropov. The Stars 2nd place finish at this high calibre tournament placed them among the strongest Novice AAA teams in Northeastern North America and that strong finish is a confidence booster for the program.

“Our program is starting to get some recognition in southern Ontario and our players have become more familiar with the level of play. It is fun to see us have more success,” said coach and program coordinator Randy Edmonds.
