The Eurocamp Summer Stars Novice AAA spring travel team played its first tournament action on the weekend and came home with one tie in five games at the Can Lan Tournament in Markham this weekend.

In their first game they finished with a 1-1 tie against Mission USA from upstate New York. In their second contest they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Mississauga Rebels. Stars head coach Randy Edmonds was not overwhelmed by the club’s performance in their second contest.

“We did not play very well,” said Edmonds.

“We were on our heels all game and our travel day the day before looked like it caught up to us.”

In game three the Stars played arguably the best team in the tournament; Trent Valley Stars, featuring many AAA players from the Peteborough Petes organization. In that game the Stars were humbled 9-0.

The two clubs locked horns in the consolation round and the local Stars dropped a 5-1 decision to Valley Stars 5-1.

In their final game (consolation final) the Stars met up again with Team Mission USA which slipped by the Stars 4-3. Mission scored a late shorthanded goal with just over a minute to play on a bad bounce where the puck hit the side of the net and bounced in front of our net on there stick and scored. The Stars Kyle Perreault had just tied it up a few minutes earlier.

Despite the record Edmonds believes it was a great experience for the players to get a taste of AAA hockey before Bantam begins.

“It was a good tournament, well organized and great competition our team features three minors who all held there own in the tourney,” said Edmonds.

“It would be fun to see this group play together and compete in some real competitive tournaments and watch the group develop.”
