Church powers Lady Lakers to win

It was just a matter of time before scoring sensation Leesa Church hit the mark and that is exactly what she did at the fourteenth minute when she struck a well placed ball to the top right hand corner past Trent University keeper Emma Parkes. Alexandra Instance (55th min.) and Kim Tait (64tth min.) each added a goal as the Lady Lakers (1-1-2) defeated the Excalibur’s (0-3-1) in convincing fashion.

The game started rather slowly with Trent maintaining most of the possession in the first ten minutes however no real scoring opportunity would arise. The Lady Lakers started to move the ball well and then Church scored her first of the season with a strike from just beyond the 18 yard box.

The Lady Lakers continued to press and with minutes to go in the first half Parkes came up with several key saves to keep her team close.

The second half was a different story as the Lakers got off to a strong start and controlled most of the play for the rest of the game. Instance and Tait scored identical goals cleaning up the junk inside the 18 yard box off corner kicks.

Lady Laker’s keeper Sam Behm collected her first shutout of the season making five saves in the process. Behm wasn’t overly occupied but made the key saves necessary for the victory.

“I am very happy with the effort today,” said head coach Vito Castiglione. “We played a solid team game and executed our game plan well.”

The Lady Lakers will hit the road on September 19/20 as the face RMC and Queen’s.
