Canoe Club shines at Olmstead beach

Zaffia Laplante and Zeeyana Laplante led the way with three gold medals each on the weekend as the North Bay Canoe Club hosted their own Regatta at Olmstead beach on Trout Lake. Davis Evans, Scott Rancourt and Monika Hotson also chipped in with a couple of first place finishes each while Gavin McGirr, Will Mcfarlane, Regan Jackson, Carla White and Jeremy Robinson paddled their way to three silver medals apiece..

The Club finished second overall for aggregate points and collected a total of 85 medal placings Highlight of the day was the open men’s K-2 race and the brother team of Scott and Shawn Kerrigan as they dug deep and raced to victory in the 200 m sprint event as they narrowly edged out a very strong (and much younger) crew from Rideau Canoe Club.

Over 200 athletes from across the Province competed and many North Bay paddlers hit the podium for the first time this season. Other Gold medalists included, Meghan Johnson, Adam Arthurs , Skyler Graham, Morgan Mantha, Jessica Trottier, Emily Morin, Candace McGirr, Tim Evans, Ben Robitaille, Devin McGirr and Louis Phillipe Samson.

Silver medalists included Julia Morris, Riley Evans, Alec Shaw, Gavin Shaw, Sean Patterson, Spencer Smith, Bradley Gamble, Justin Gagne, Noah Swain, Dean James and , Clayton Piche

Bronze medalists included Jacob Hotten , Mathew Robinson, Justin Rancourt, Zach Pecore, Rory Pecore, Daniel Zhoo, Nicholas Joyes and David Mutchmor, Nathan Peachey, Bradley Piche, Isaiah Allen, Liam Patterson and Casey Walsh.

Newcomers Tessa Steele and Courtney Brunette had an amazing race in the very competitive Bantam Girls K-2 event finishing well with a solid 4th place finish while Andrew Robinson was a solid crew boat paddlers and great helper throughout the day.

Coaches Ben Robitaille, Emily Morin and Louis Phillipe Samson were pleased with every athlete’s performance and particularly impressed with the Bantam and Pewee War Canoe crews.

Next up for the Club is the Eastern Ontario Divisional qualifier in Kingston August 8th. Top five from each event advance to the Provincial championships in Sudbury on August 23rd at Ramsey Lake. For more details about the Club’s racing programs and recreational kids camps please call 476-2030.
