Trevor Brown of the North Bay Norsemen Weightlifting Club took part in his first ever Canadian Senior Championship on the weekend in La Prairie, Quebec. Lifting in the 94 kilo class, the former Canadian junior champion, was able to break all his personal records and grab the bronze medal in the process.

Brown waged a classic battle for the final medal with Sylvain Leblanc of Montreal. Brown made all three of his snatch attempts to finish with 127 kilos; Leblanc meanwhile was successful with 132 kilos. Brown’s strategy was a simple one - lift 6 more kilos in the clean and jerk than Leblanc. Leblanc finished with 150 kilos in the clean and jerk and Brown called for 156 on his second attempt. Trevor registered a narrow miss. He then called for the same weight on his last attempt and made no mistake. Brown edged out Leblanc by one kilo in the total to win the bronze. The gold went to Sasha Amede of Montreal, the silver to Guy Marineau of Lachute, Quebec.

Earlier in the competition, Chris Lemieux, formerly of the Norsemen and now with the Sabaria Club of Mississauga, placed sixth in the 85 kilo class. Lemieux made 105 kilos in the snatch and 141 in the clean and jerk. Buck Ramsay, another local product and last year’s silver medalist at 85 kilos, did not compete due to a nagging wrist injury.
