Bedard goes on scoring spree for Barons

The École Secondaire Catholique Algonquin Barons junior and senior basketball teams competed in the 31st Annual Gold Cup Classic hosted by Timmins High & Vocational School on the weekend. Both teams garnished a 1-2 record facing tough competition.

The juniors defeated the Kirkland Lake CVI Red Devils 67-56 in their only win. The game was marked by a record-setting performance by Algonquin grade 10 guard Nicholas Bédard who poured in 45 points and broke the tournament record of 41 points. Bédard also set a tournament record by averaging 28.6 points per game. Daniel Trudel added 14 points in the victory.

The junior Barons lost to Lasalle S.S. from Sudbury 71-37, and were nipped by Korah Collegiate (Sault Ste Marie) 40-36. Against Lasalle, Bédard led the way with 18 points Devyn Savignac added eight points and Stéphane Chaput chipped in with six. In the Korah game Bédard scored 23 and Chaput and Savinac each added four points.

The senior Barons beat the White Pines Wolverines 57-45. Kerry Sullivan led the way with 22 points, Mathieu St. Louis scored 11 and Pat Carvell and David Foster each added six. In their opener, the Barons lost to tournament host TH&VS Blues 67-21. Top scorers were Sullivan with 11 and Pat Carvell with four.

In their other game, the Barons lost on a last second shot 55-54 to Amos Kodiaks from Québec. Pat Carvell had made two free throws to put the Barons ahead by one with 20 seconds left, but despite a great defensive effort, the Amos player shot over three Algonquin players to win the game. Sullivan scored 15 points, with Foster adding 14, Carvell 12 and St. Louis with nine.
