The St-Joseph’s Scollard Hall Bears defeated the Algonquin Barons 19-7 last night in NDA junior football action.

The Barons opened the scoring on the first play of their first possession as Éric Joly rumbled 65 yards off tackle for the major. Kicker Jean-Michel Paulin added the convert to make 7-0 Barons.

On the ensuing drive, however, the Bears responded by using a solid running game to march downfield for the touchdown. Jeremy Poeta scored the major while Tyler Geikie booted the convert to make it 7-7.

The game then turned into a defensive struggle as both defences tightened up, forcing punt after punt and laying big hit after big hit.

In the third, however, the Scollard offence finally broke the Barons ‘D.’

Despite starting their drive inside their own 10 yard line, the Bears once again relied on a solid running attack to march 90 yards downfield for the touchdown. Travis Tennant scored the major making it 13-7 Bears.

In the fourth, the Barons comeback attempt was foiled by the Bears defence which forced and recovered their second fumble of the game. The Bears offence then took advantage of a shortened field as Tyler Geikie punched it in for six, putting the game out of reach for the Barons.
