Barrie Eastview Wildcats win Lady Trojan Classic

The meeting was a rematch of an earlier round robin game that took place on Friday, one which saw the Barons walk away with the win. The game was fast paced with continuous action. The Barrie squad outscored the Barons 11-8 in the first quarter led by Sarah Wheatcroft with 6 pts. Algonquin answered back outscoring the Wildcats 10-7 in the second quarter to tie the game at 18-18 by halftime. Tanya Simard led all scorers in the 2nd quarter with 8 pts.

The Wildcats applied full court pressure to open the 2nd half and went on to establish a 17-7 lead in the 3rd quarter. The fourth quarter just wasn’t long enough for the Barons as they were outscored 11-9 and were unable to muster a comeback.

In the Senior semi-finals the Barrie Eastview Wildcats defeated Manitoulin Secondary School 24-22 in the dying seconds of a highly defensive game. Both teams had chances to seal a victory early but were unable to do so and the game was decided at the end on the foul line. Laura Davidson and Amber Nicholson led the Wildcats and Aida Tribinvishis was top scorerer for the Manitoulin squad.

In the other semi The Algonquin Braves walked away with a one sided victory over the Almaquin Highlanders 53-24. All scorers were led by Mila Paris from Algonquin with 31 pts. She hit for a remarkable 7 for 7 three point attempts. Tanya Simard chipped in with 8 pts and Haleigh Raeburn scored 11 for the Highlanders.

Tayna Simard and Mila Paris of Algonquin were both named to the tournament all-star team.


In Junior action held at Algonquin this weekend. The West Ferrris Lady Trojan junior squad fell to Midland 36-31 in the first semi-final and Chippewa Raiders were dropped 40-14 by the St. Mary’s Knights from Sault Ste. Marie.

Sault Ste. Marie Knights met Midland in the final and walked away with their first championship victory at the Lady Trojan Classic.

Local all-star team recipients were Stephanie Trottier from Algonquin, Sarah Loreto from Chippewa and Kylie Deschenes from the Lady Trojans.
