The Ecole Secondaire Catholique Algonquin Track and Field Team captured the annual Nipissing Invitational Track and Field meet that was held at Cundari Field and hosted by the NDA on Saturday.

The Barons were led by Benoit Boulay, who cruised in winning the junior boys 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Adam Price also garned 3 first places finishes by winning the junior boys long jump, triple jump and the 400m.

The boys team for the Barons managed to accumulate 242 points in winning the boys aggregate over the St. Joseph-Scollard Bears, who amassed 179 points.

Other first place finishers for the Barons’ boys team were Patrick Laferriere in the junior boys 300m hurdles and high jump, Dan Trudel in the junior boys javelin, Patrick Dufresne in the midget boys triple jump, Jordan Mino in the 1500m wheelchair and Jean-Francois Morin in the senior boys discus.

On the girls side, the Barons (185 points) managed a 2nd place in the aggregate to the Chippewa Raiders (202 points).

Jillian Callahan earned a first in the senior 100m, Krista Charland won the senior 400m, while France Barry earned first place in the midget 3000m.

“We had a great meet," said Barons head coach Mike Ohlman.

“Most of our kids were really ready to compete. The coaching staff has been working very hard with their respective athletes in preparing them for NDA. It's nice to win this, but our goal is to win the NDA overall aggregate on the 24th. This meet is just a good tune-up for the district championships.

“It's going to be close, with Chippewa, SJSH and West Ferris, any one of us could win the overall, it’ll just depend on how each teams’ athletes do on that day,” he said.

“But this is no doubt a big lift for our program."

Next up for the Barons is and NDA twilight meet on Wednesday, May 16th at Cundari Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.
