The ESC Algonquin Barons won their fifth consecutive game of the season by downing the Chippewa Raiders in Senior Girls Basketball play 30-20 at the Chippewa gym.

Despite being down 13-12 at the half, the Barons stormed back in the second half by using their stellar defensive play to gain valuable momentum. Jolinne Maisonneuve was the top point getter for the Barons with 10, while Célyne Bégin and Meagan Willard each added 4. The Raiders were led by Sam Loreto with 8 points and Bonnie Jakula added 6 points. The victory puts the Barons alone in first place.

"The girls felt that they didn't play well in the first half, but that by only being down by a point at the half, we still were in the game," said Barons coach Tim Lowe.

"We didn't execute well in the first half at both ends of the court, but we really stepped it up defensively in the 3rd quarter. Our foul shooting was horrendous (7 for 31), but we kept plugging away against a very gritty squad," said Lowe.

"We knew tonight would be a good test, and our nerves showed in the first quarter (down 7-4 after one period), but we settled down and managed to win each of the next 3 quarters. The girls showed that they can compete in this league but if we don't come prepared anything can happen."

Next up are the West Ferris Trojans on Thursday night at the Algonquin gym. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
