The Algonquin Barons drew first blood in the NDA senior girls basketball finals earning a 39-24 win over the Chippewa Raiders on Wednesday night at the Algonquin gym.

"Our second quarter was superb," said Barons coach Tim Lowe.

"Defensively we executed our game plan to perfection. Holding that team to 3 points in that quarter gave our young players so much confidence, that it enabled them to relax on offense. Daphne Reynolds’ 3 three- pointers (in that quarter) were catalysts in our victory," added Lowe.

"Even though she scored 14 points, I thought that we did a good job on Kaytlyn Faucon. Genevieve Dumas had a great game", said Lowe. " And Kimberly Gibson played her best game of the year."

"Game two will be a different story. Chippewa seemed very flat tonight. I expect them to come back with much more intensity on Friday", said Lowe. "We cannot rest easy. I expect them to apply much more pressure", added Lowe.

Top scorers for the Barons were as follows:

Reynolds and Dumas 11 points each, Tanya Simard 10 points, Gibson 3 points, Mila Paris and Catherine Sénécal 2 each.

For the Raiders: Faucon 14 points, Holly Preweda 5 points, Sarah Gourlie 3 points and Julie Stinson and Sam Loreto 1 point each.

Game two goes on Friday November 18th at 2:00pm at Chippewa.
