The Algonquin Barons Senior Boys Basketball team captured the Bishop Alexander Carter Gator Cup in Sudbury last weekend by downing E.S.C. Horizon in the final 62-48. Nick Bédard paced the Barons as he poured in a game high 37 points. Sean Bastarache added 21 points. The game was tied at 16 after the first quarter, but the Barons hit for 24 points – 16 by Bédard - in the second stanza to essentially put the game out of reach for Horizon.
In their first game, the Barons beat E.S. Hamner 59-15, with Tyler Bessette-Perrin leading the way with 9 points, while Bastarache chipped in 7 points. They also defeated Chelmsford Valley District S.S. 50-47 in the semi-final. Bastarache and Bédard scored 21 and 20 points respectively, while Dan Trudel added 5 points. They also beat the Espanola S.S. Spartans 60-44 with Bastarache leading the offensive charge for Algonquin with 20 points. Bédard added 14 points and Jake Hansen poured in 8 points and Matt Cheaney scored 6.
Bédard was named to the tournament all-star team and Bastarache won the 3-point shooting contest.
