The Ecole Secondaire Catholique Algonquin Senior Girls Basketball team stretched their strangle hold on first place by downing a tenacious Widdifield Wildcat team 37-24. The Wildcats forced the Barons into many committing turnovers and with 5 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter closed to within 3 points, but the Barons hit for back to back 3 pointers to extend the lead to 10 points and put the game out of reach.

Jolinne Maisonneuve, from the Barons, led all scorers with 16 points, while Alisha Perron added 7 points and Meagan Willard 4 points. Sarah Trottier played outstanding defensively for the Barons also hit the scoresheet with 2 points.

Kristen Sheffield had 8 points, while Meghan Bonnah added 7 and Morgan Bonnah chipped in 4 for Widdifield.

“There was no quit in the Wildcats tonight”, said Barons coach Tim Lowe. “They forced us into bad decisions and as a result, we became more frustrated”, he added. “We are a young team, and sometimes you need to be reminded that if you don’t keep working hard, anything can happen.

“Usually our defense is the best part of our team game, but tonight, we were tired”, added Lowe. “We had a tough weekend in Timmins, where we finished 4th, but that’s no excuse. We need to have a better effort tomorrow against Scollard”, he said.

The Barons host the St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears in a junior/senior doubleheader at the Algonquin gym. Game times are 5:00 p.m. for the junior game, while the seniors tip-off at 6:30 p.m.
