Assante Selects successful at Tyke provincials
The Assante Selects Tyke Baseball Team had an outstanding weekend at the SOBA Provincial Championships in Richmond Hill. The team, playing its first game of the season, drew the host club and crushed them by a score of 21-3.

The team, playing its first game of the season, drew the host club and crushed them by a score of 21-3. The team’s two catchers, Jacob Brown and Zach Scott, led the way with four rbi’s each and Paul Wilkinson brought the Selects’ boisterous fans to their feet with a daring theft of home early in the game.
The win moved the Selects into a tough game against the Brampton Red Sox who were competing in their sixth tournament of the summer. The game featured excellent pitching on both sides with the Selects’ pitchers, Brett Hargrave and Lucas Brown combining on a seven hitter. Unfortunately for the North Bay squad, the Red Sox hurlers gave up a lead-off double to Kurtis Winrow and then threw a no-hitter the rest of the way and cruised to victory on unforced errors made by the Selects.
With both teams facing elimination, the Selects played a tense game against a Weston squad in the mid-day heat. The Selects jumped out to an early lead behind the hitting of Cody Sutcliffe, who hit an astonishing .833 for the weekend, and Colin Embree, who was tied for second on the team in hits at the tournament. Steven Antler cashed in the eventual winning run as the Selects hung on for a 7-3 win with Ben Bosselle getting a strikeout with the bases loaded in the bottom of the last inning.
The Selects third game of the day was a nightcap against a club from Tottenham. The Selects welcomed back Nick Watson to the line-up and he manufactured a run out of being hit by a pitch, stealing both second and third and scoring in a cloud of dust after the third baseman misplayed the catcher’s pick-off attempt. Unfortunately, a late rally came up short and the Assante Selects were eliminated from the Provincials by a score of 10-8.
