The Anthony family — Doyle Sr. and sons Doyle Jr. and Dustin — are the 2007 recipients of the George Martyn Memorial Trophy for contribution to the sport of basketball in North Bay.

Doyle Sr. started playing basketball in 1969-70 at Marshall Park Public School. After playing four years with the Trojans, he continued his career at Canadore and Cambrian College. While at college, he was an OCAA all-star and finished second in league scoring.

Doyle moved his family to Toronto where he continued following his love of the game by coaching and refereeing in a competitive high school league. Upon returning to North Bay, Anthony started coaching with the senior Trojans under the leadership of head coach Jim Randle.
Over the next seven years as an assistant, the senior Trojans won four NDA championships, two NOSSA titles and made two OFSAA appearances. He then began coaching at Our Lady of Fatima, where his kids attended, and in the Nipissing Basketball Association.

Anthony returned to West Ferris in 1999 to coach at the junior level and helped the Trojans win four NDA Titles and a NOSSA crown. The past two years, he has jumped up to the senior level, where the Green and White have won nine straight NDA titles. Doyle has also played and coached in men’s league for more than 15 years.

Doyle Jr. began playing basketball in Grade 7 while attending Our Lady of Fatima. He played four years at West Ferris, where his team captured four straight NDA championships. In his last year, he was selected team MVP and an NDA first-team all-star.

He is now in his fourth year at Mount Allison University, where he has started all four years. As a rookie, he was selected the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association rookie of the year.

In his third year, he finished third in league scoring and was selected as an all-Canadian. Last year, he was invited with 24 other players to attend an all-Canadian camp hosted by Dave Smart and Leo Rautins. This year, he has enjoyed a great senior year, leading the Mounties to the playoffs and in scoring.

At the end of the season, Anthony should become an all-Canadian for the second straight year. He has also spent his summers returning to North Bay and coaching youth in the Nipissing Basketball Association and playing in the men’s summer league.

Dustin Anthony started playing basketball at Our Lady of Fatima in Grade 7. In two years of junior at West Ferris, he guided the Trojans to two junior NDA titles and a NOSSA championship. In his final junior year, he was selected MVP of the league. The past three years in senior, he has won three NDA championships and been selected a 1st Team All- Star twice and twice named league MVP.

Dustin has been a part of the provincial development programs the past four years. He has made MDP and JDP teams and was the last cut from the provincial team in 2005. This season, Dustin was the high scorer in all but one game he played, averaging more than 20 points per contest.

Dustin is currently investigating options to play ball at the university level next year. The schools that have expressed interest include Ryerson, UPEI, Windsor and St. Francis-Xavier. He has coached and played in the Nipissing Basketball Association and the summer men’s league.

The Anthonys will receive their award at the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame annual induction and awards dinner at the Best Western North Bay, April 26.
