The Nipissing Alouettes picked up an important two points on Sunday, moving into a second place tie with South Muskoka in the Northern division by beating the Shield 4-3 in overtime in GMHL action on Sunday afternoon in Sturgeon Falls. Robin Mendelsohn was the overtime hero this time around, as he scored his 7th goal of the season only 17 seconds into the extra frame. Mendelsohn fired a wrist shot as he crossed the blue line beating goaltender Eric Pye on his blocker side.

“We knew if we stayed close we could pull it through," said head coach Lui Ricci noting the Als dropped a 5-3 decision in Muskoka in the season opener.

"The Shield and Elliot Lake are the teams to beat in our division. We needed to stay close to compete for first or second in the division because that will be important come playoff time.”

Daniel Madigan, DJ Champagne and Alex Rigby also scored for the Als. Steven Garcia added a pair of helpers.

Dylan Sontag, Travis Saltz and Sly Spencer scored for the Shield. Saltz also added two assists.

Pat Beaudry was once again solid in goal picking up his second straight victory stopping 24 shots. Pye took the loss making 28 stops.

The Als now get the week off before hosting the Ville-Marie Dragons on Friday night at the Sturgeon Falls Arena. Game time is 8pm.
