Titles were declared in four divisions during the Singles event at the 6th Annual 8-Ball Rumble last weekend in North Bay. Women’s Bronze Singles Charlotte Young from Ottawa won 4 straight matches on her way to the championship title.
Titles were declared in four divisions during the Singles event at the 6th Annual 8-Ball Rumble last weekend in North Bay.

Women’s Bronze Singles

Charlotte Young from Ottawa won 4 straight matches on her way to the championship title. Young advanced to the finals after defeating Sudbury players Angele Sauve, Cheryl McKee and Jennifer Peterson from Ottawa. Pauline Lee, also of Sudbury was her next opponent and Young handed her a 3-1 loss, sending her to the losers bracket.

Lee then rebounded and beat fellow Sudbury player and third place finisher, Angele Sauve 3-1 to get another shot at Young. Once in the final, Lee handed Young her first loss of the tournament with a close 3-2 match forcing a sudden death round. In the end it was Young pulling out a 3-0 the victory.

Copper Singles

Steve Hermes of Sault Ste. Marie captured the championship title, going through the tournament undefeated. To get a place in the final, Hermes defeated Frank Barbarie and David Davidson of Ottawa, Trevor Joseph and eventual second place finisher Cory Lambkins of North Bay.

Lambkins earned a spot in the final by rebounding to defeat third place finisher David Davidson in the semi final. Only the first set was need as Hermes defeated Lambkins 3 games to 1.

Bronze Singles

In a field of 61 players, North Bay’s Derrick Girard captured first place defeating Cory Johnston of Sault St. Marie in the final. Girard got to the final by defeating Sudbury players Diane Boudreault, Jeramie Lessard, Chop Waindubence, James Trudeau and from Ottawa Phil Lahey. He also defeated fellow North Bayite Dave Ohrodnyk in the quarterfinal.

Johnston of Sault Ste. Marie battled all day to earn a spot in the final. Johnston had 4 straight wins before losing to Dave Ohrodnyk, putting him in the losers bracket. Once their Johnston continued his winning ways and defeated Marc Mathon, James Trudeau and Ohrodnyk 3-2 in the semi final to get a chance at Girard. Girard wasted little time picking up the title as he defeated Johnston 3-2 in the first set. Ohrodnyk of North Bay finished in third.

Silver Singles

The Silver Division final was between the 2006 defending champion, Darren Corston of North Bay and newcomer Dan Lafreniere of Sault Ste. Marie. Lafreniere opened the day with a win over Sudbury’s Mike Mallete. He then defeated fellow Sault player, Andre Trahan. In his next outing he lost to Rick Lenander of Toronto, sending him to the losers side of the bracket. He then rebounded and defeated Rick Aubin and Andy Aupin of Sudbury, Curtis Holden an of Ottawa, Lenander again and in the semi final, third place finisher Mike Carrier of North Bay.

Corston’s road to the final was much easier as he defeated Rick Aubin and Dan Hnatuk of Sudbury, Lenander, and Mike Carrier to advance to the final without a loss. In the first set of the final, Lefreniere defeated Corston by a score of 4 games to 2 to force a sudden death match. Corston emerged the victor with a 4-1 win and the championship for the second straight year.
