Wilcox, Dorothy Winnifred (nee Ferguson)

Passed away at Cassellholme in North Bay on Thursday, May 24, 2012 in her 89th year.
Dorothy was born to Olive and Stacey Ferguson in 1923 and raised on the family farm in Warwick Township in S.W. Ontario. After high school, she attended Brescia College at the University of Western Ontario and graduated with a degree in Home Economics. She worked as a dietician and teacher in Toronto and Exeter before moving to North Bay to teach at Algonquin Collegiate Institute. There she met fellow teacher Jim Wilcox and they were married in 1954. Children Jamie and Gwyneth were born and raised in North Bay. The Wilcox homes on Galt St. and Sandra Ave. were the scenes over the years of many happy memories, often involving great neighbours.
Dorothy was a loyal member of St. Andrew’s United Church and the UCW there. She was often found making sandwiches or baked goods for church events. Her “family” at St. Andrews was a great support to her and she valued those friendships very much.
Dorothy’s interests were wide and varied. She took great joy in her gardens and enjoyed travelling and researching her family tree. Her special family dinners were meticulously prepared, beautifully presented and always delicious.
Dorothy is survived, and will be greatly missed, by her children Jamie (Kathy) of North Bay and Gwyneth (Dan Puddister) of Sault Ste. Marie, grandchildren Alex, Hannah and Cameron Wilcox and Molly, Sadie and Sam Puddister, sisters Margaret Ford of Forest, Joyce Cavill of Barrie and Carol Sanderson (Dick) of Frankfort, Michigan, sister-in-law Jean Wilcox of St. Catherines, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Wilcox.
The family wishes to thank all those who helped and supported Dorothy over the years, especially the staff at Marina Point and Cassellholme, whose caring made her final years dignified and comfortable.
The family will receive friends at Martyn Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 30th from 7 to 9 p.m. and at St. Andrew’s United Church on Thursday, May 31st from noon until the Memorial Service there at 2 p.m. If desired, donations to St. Andrew’s United Church would be appreciated.
