VERHELST-DOKIS, Mona-Lisa

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mona-Lisa after a short battle with cancer.  Mona-Lisa passed peacefully at Nipissing Serenity Hospice on Saturday January 6th, 2024 at the age of 64.  At Mona’s request an indigenous ceremony took place immediately after her passing with elders, an eagle staff, close family, and friends in attendance.

Mona-Lisa leaves behind a legacy as the cherished wife of Gary, sharing 39 beautiful years together, as well as a beloved auntie to numerous nieces and nephews, and a wonderful friend to many.  Her impact extended beyond family and friends, as Mona-Lisa dedicated herself to teaching for 27 years, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students.  Her infectious laughter, a testament to her joyous spirit, will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

We would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, PSW’S and porters at Health Sciences North who provided great care to Mona-Lisa.  We would also like to thank the staff at Nipissing Serenity Hospice for their wonderful care during Mona-Lisa’s brief stay.  A special thank you to Dr Jinnah for providing exceptional support to Mona-Lisa and her family.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nipissing Serenity Hospice would be greatly appreciated, honouring Mona-Lisa’s final days and a cause that was dear to her.  It’s a charitable organization that Mona-Lisa supported for several years.

The family will be receiving visitors at McGuinty Funeral Home (North Bay) on Saturday, April 6, 2024 between the hours of 1:00pm - 4:00pm with a thanksgiving sharing circle to follow at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nipissing Serenity Hospice would be greatly appreciated by her family.
