VEENIS: Richard Methuen

Posted

Passed peacefully at North Bay General Hospital on January 5, 2009. Dick lived 87 very full years. A devoted husband to Alice Patricia (Skaftfeld), a great dad and inspiration to Dirk (wife Moira), Allison (husband Mark),
Blair (wife Debbie) and Jan (husband Edwin) and a proud grandfather of Michael, Kay, Andrew and Jack. Dick’s was an incredible journey. It began in the small Northern Ontario town of Creighton Mines where Dick was born in 1921. He travelled across Canada over the course of a successful 40 year career with Canadian National Railways, interrupted briefly by a call to duty in WWII in Europe where Dick saw action as a Spitfire Pilot. Dick’s railway experience in Canada laid the foundation for the next
chapter of his journey. Both Dick and Alice enthusiastically embraced new adventures that awaited them in Zambia, Indonesia and Bangladesh. In 1981, Dick became a Member of the Order of Canada for his work overseas. In 1984 the journey came full circle when Dick and Alice returned to the familiarity of the north where they retired to a fulfilling life among the many close
friends and the welcoming community of their beloved Callander Bay home. Friends are welcome to visit at the Martyn Funeral Home between 1:00 and 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 10th. A memorial service will commence at
3:00. In Dick’s memory, donations will be appreciated at the North Bay YMCA.
