It is with sadness The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie announce the sudden death of Sister St. Paul (Victoria Shami) on Monday, February 20, 2006 at the Sault Area Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie, surrounded by her family and Sisters. Sister St. Paul was born in Sault Ste. Marie and entered The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie in 1940. Sister St. Paul was a teacher and Principal and ministered in schools throughout Northern Ontario including Sudbury, Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), North Bay and Wawa. Following retirement Sister returned to Sault Ste. Marie where she devoted her time to visiting the sick and shut-ins. A gentle and kind woman of great faith and compassion Sister St. Paul was committed to her students, her family, the elderly and her community. She cared deeply about her family and was able to spend extended time with them in the past few years. She was also known to love watching a good game of hockey. Predeceased by her parents Mary Pona and George Shami as well as brothers Michael, Peter, Fred and Andrew, Sister is survived by her sister Sophia (Peter Piraino) and brothers Nick (Irene) and Paul (Monica) as well as nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation at the Arthur Funeral Home, Sault Ste. Marie Tuesday, February 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. and at Precious Blood Cathedral, Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday, February 22 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. Visitation will also be held at St. Joseph's Motherhouse in North Bay on Thursday, February 23 from 2 p.m. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening. A funeral liturgy will be held on Friday, February 24, 2006 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, North Bay. May Sister St. Paul rest in peace.
