PITT: William Edward “Bill”

Posted

Bill was born in North Bay in 1949 and he was proud of his Métis Heritage.
After a long and courageous battle with cancer over the last 10 years, Bill
passed away at the North Bay General Hospital - Scollard Site on Sunday,
September 21st, 2008. Bill was the much beloved husband of Carol Ann
Baldwin, he was 58 years old. Loving father of Jonathan Pitt (Jody–Lynn)
of North Bay and Sarah Pitt of Redbridge. He was the loving and proud Poppa
of Jocelyn. Dearly loved son of Jackie (Mrs. Arnold Loucks) and son-in law
of Florence (Mrs. Carl Baldwin). He will be lovingly remembered by his
siblings Wayne Pitt (wife Judy) of Chatsworth, Sharron Turcotte (friend
Marius Lavoie) of Northbrook and Denise St.Onge (husband Gaetan) of Longlac.
Bill was employed by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario for over 25
years, and retired as Shop Foreman in North Bay in 2000. Bill was inducted
into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He first hit sports
headlines in 1965 when he became the first North Bay athlete to ever win a
Canadian Track championship as he captured the Canadian Midget 880
Championship in a driving rainstorm at St. John, New Brunswick. His time of
2:01.2 was the fastest midget time in Canada that year. He spent several
seasons with the North Bay Tiger-Cats of the Northern Football Conference.
Pitt also played broomball at the highest provincial level for almost 15
years and was on four Ontario champions with the Hall of Fame inductee team,
Aunt Mays. He also played fastball, mainly in the Mercantile League - but
also in the GMFA, and took part in various area hockey leagues. As well as
spending time with his family, Bill also found great enjoyment from the time
he spent hunting and fishing. Recently Bill had enjoyed the sport of Archery
and had competed at both the Canadian and World Class Levels. Visitation
will be held in the Martyn Funeral Home on Thursday, September 25th from 2-4
and 7-9:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Brice’s Anglican
Church on Friday, September 26th at 2:00 P.M. Interment to follow at St.
John’s Anglican Cemetery. If desired, donations to Kidsport North Bay will
