MECHEFSKE (née Whalley), Joan Addie Marie
1951 – 2024

Passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at Algonquin Nursing Home in Mattawa on Sunday February 26th, 2024.

Joan was the beloved wife of Keith Mechefske. She was 72 years old. Loving mother of Bonnie and Stacey (Chris).

Loving sister of Ida Wall (Bud deceased), Evelyn Beckett (Robert deceased), Doreen Beckett (Orville deceased), Lila McGunnigle (Whit) (Rene deceased), Philis Whalley (Lester deceased), Ruth McMaster (Edward deceased), Kathy McAran (Peter deceased), Ron Whalley (Christine deceased), Deb Lacelle (Wayne) and Walter Whalley.

Dear sister in law of Gladys Whalley & Linda Guilbeault as well as the Mechefske family.

Joan was a loved sister-in-law to the Mechefskes:

Cheryl Beaudoin (Norman), Kerry (Sue), Cathy Tyo (Rick), Kurtiss (Claudia), Kirk (Monique), Christi-Anne Hall (Kevin), Kraig (Simone), her mother-in-law Colette Mechefske and pre-deceased by her father-in-law Kelvin.

Predeceased by her infant daughter Angelique, her parents Alvin & Mildred, and her brothers Harry, Dennis & Russell Whalley.

Joan will be remembered for her kind words, quick wit, and loving heart.  She was a hard-working, salt-of-the-earth woman who excelled at whatever profession she chose.  A natural leader, who in her short time, provided a strong guiding light for her daughters’ success.  Joan suffered a brain aneurysm 25 years ago and since then spent her time cheerfully expressing the joy in her heart through song and a good joke.  Her beautiful spark will be deeply missed by all who crossed her path.

Friends may call at the Mattawa and Rutherglen United Church (formerly St. Andrew’s in the Pines) on Saturday, March 9th at 11 am. Funeral Service will follow immediately at the same location.  After the service, a reception to celebrate Joan's life will be at the Golden Age in Mattawa.  The interment will take place in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Brain Aneurysm Society under Joan's memorial would be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.  Please follow the link to donate to Joan’s memorial page.  https://give.bafound.org/site/TR/Events/General?px=1158777&pg=personal&fr_id=1040

Special thanks to all the staff at Algonquin Nursing Home for their excellent and compassionate care.  Leave online messages of sympathy.
