August 27, 1926 - April 12, 2024

The family of Waltraud “Wally” Leonhardt announces with sorrow her passing on April 12, 2024, at the West Nipissing General Hospital at the age of 97 years. Daughter of the late Wilhelm and of the late Alwina. Beloved wife of the late Martin (1921-2000). Dear mother of Karl, Ralph, Christine, and Kathy (Gordon). Remembered fondly by her grandchildren Tammy, Jennifer and Jonathan and her great-grandchildren Braydun, Sydnnie, Kaelie, Briauna, Kaelan, and Rowan.

Waltraud, her husband, and son emigrated to Canada from Germany in 1949. After living in Windsor and Leamington, Ontario, for over twenty years, she and her family moved to their home on the shores of Lake Nipissing in 1972. Waltraud was an active member of the Rhine-Danube Club and the Germania Club, and enjoyed meeting with friends as well as helping out as “Toast Lady” at the Jocko Point Community Centre. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, reading, watching wildlife on the deck and, in her later years, watching Andre Rieu concerts on Youtube.

The family wishes to thank Bonnie Brown; Robbie, and Andrea of the NBRHC Geriatric Community Paramedicine Outreach Program; her family physician Dr. Kerry Reed as well as Dr. Ann Marie McKenna of the NBRHC Specialized Geriatric Clinic; her co-ordinator Renee at Home and Community Care Support Services North East; and her nurses from the VON and her nurses and PSWs (especially Linda) from Carepartners. Their care of her as she aged at home was greatly appreciated.

A private family celebration of Waltraud’s life will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements in care of the Theoret-Bourgeois Funeral Home, Sturgeon Falls.
