Klara (Kiefer) Bernhardt

Klara Bernhardt of North Bay, passed away after a short illness surrounded by her family at Sault Area Hospital, Plummer site, January 22, 2011 in her 84th year. Klara is reunited at last with her beloved husband, Karl (2002). Loving mother of Herb Bernhardt (Donna) of Sault Ste. Marie and Gerlinde Bernhardt-Davis (Dan) of North Bay. Generous and devoted grandmother of Erika (Pierre), Jessica, Sarah Melissa (Andrew), Adam, Kevin and Sean (Kate), and very proud great-grandmother of Kiefer, Liam, Blake and Hudson. She will be greatly missed by her brother Ed Kiefer of Arizona. Klara was born in Apatin, Serbia and met Karl in Innsbruck, Austria after the war where they married in 1947. They emigrated to Canada in 1952 with their children, raising their family in Leamington and Windsor until moving to North Bay in 1966. She loved children and had always regretted that her dream to be a teacher had been interrupted by WWII. Her happiest years were spent as her grandchildren were growing up, when the whole family would regularly gather around her table to enjoy the meals she prepared and to laugh and be together. Her life and memory will be celebrated in the same way, with a small family memorial and a meal shared together.
