HAFLIDSON, Marion Kathleen

Marion Kathleen Haflidson was the wife of the late Ronald S. Haflidson, and the third of five children born to Rupert C. Armstrong and his wife Margretta Anderson of Hilliard Township, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, two sisters: Jean Grierson (Norman) of Oshawa, Ont.; Dorothy Bates (Bob) of Fenelon Falls, Ont., and a brother William Henry Armstrong (Anne) of Larder Lake, Ont. She is survived by a sister Irene Venne (Les) of Rouyn Noranda, Que. She is also survived by five children: Sylvia Gionet (Pat) of Petit Rocher, New Brunswick; John (Gwen) of North Bay, Ont.; Margaret Siebring (Leonard) of Union Bay, B.C.; Steve (Stephanie) of Toronto, Ont.; William (Fatima) Bolton, Ont. and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Marion was the proud grandparent of nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Marion was educated mainly in Rouyn Noranda.

There she attended high school and the Sarah B.Craig Business College. During the Second World War she worked in the construction office of Noranda Mines and did volunteer work as a Victory Bond salesperson, a Cub leader and Sunday school teacher. Before moving to North Bay in 1967, the Haflidson family lived in Rouyn Noranda, Duparquet and Malartic, Que. In 1955 Ron’s mining career took them to Manitouwadge, Ont. where Marion was instrumental in starting Girl Guides and they helped turn virgin land turn into a prosperous mining town of about 5000 souls. She held executive positions in a number of volunteer organizations in the communities in which she lived. In her younger days Marion bowled, curled and played golf. After moving to North Bay she was the secretary at Emmanuel United Church for a number of years and was involved with the Canadian Club, The Red Cross, St. Andrews United Church Women and various bridge clubs. Marion’s wit, charm and compassion will be deeply missed by her family and all her friends.


A Private Family Funeral Service will be held in the Martyn Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in the family plot at the North Bay Union Cemetery.
