After a long period of declining health, Joan died peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2024. She was 91 years old. Joan (Stillar) was predeceased by her husband Ron Coutts (1931-2008) and her daughter Laurie Ledoux (1960-2022). She was the much-loved mother of Glen Coutts (Denyse) of North Gower and Gary Coutts (Elaine) of London. She will be lovingly remembered by two grandchildren: Nathan and Andrew Coutts. Joan was the last of her generation, predeceased by her sisters: Mona Moore (late Elmer Strongman and Lloyd Moore), Olive Jones (late Clifford), Ruby Softley (late Jack), Elva Odd (late Emerson), and her brothers: Clifford Stillar (late Ruth), James Stillar (late Phyllis), Murray Stillar and Arnold Stillar (late Yvonne).

Joan was a lifelong, active member of Powassan United Church and the United Church Women. She was a familiar, welcoming presence at virtually every church event. Joan was a long-time member of Powassan Royal Canadian Legion Branch 453 Ladies Auxiliary. An avid gardener, Joan’s gardens were a riot of colour and bloom in every season, and often photographed by passers-by.

Joan’s family would like to acknowledge the exceptional care of the staff at Nipissing Serenity Hospice, the staff of North Bay Regional Health Centre, Drs. Quinn and Moore, VON and Home and Community Care Support Services, and all the friends and relatives who visited Joan throughout her illness and made her palliative journey peaceful and filled with love.

Cremation has taken place. Joan will be remembered privately by her family. Her ashes will be interred with her husband Ron at Powassan Union Cemetery in spring.

Should you wish to make a donation in Joan’s memory, Powassan United Church, Powassan United Church Women or Nipissing Serenity Hospice are suggested.
