Verna Carter passed peacefully January 4th 2022 and for those who never knew her age, she was…  95.

As the last surviving member of her family, Verna is survived by Bryan (Marlene), Bonnie (Doug), pre-deceased by Glenn (Wanda), 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and her special niece Luella. She was born in Harley Township and lived in New Liskeard most of her life on Birch Dr. and Haliburton St. Her enduring belief in giving to others mirrored her steadfast contributions as a member of the Community of Christ.

Funny and strong-willed, Verna found ways to contribute to her family and anyone around. She made the concession stand at the New Liskeard beach a gathering place for many years. Known as “Akela” to many, she supported boys to men through 40 years as a Cub Scout leader. Her active life included curling, bowling, line dancing and walking the boardwalk with her many friends. Verna’s nursing career eased the suffering of patients and their families in the New Liskeard hospital. Verna’s care for the hospital staff became legendary with her tribute poems for special moments, often casting a blush on nurses’ faces. She invested days creating poems like, “There once was a nurse from New Liskeard, who liked her poems to be heard…”

Verna took great pleasure in decorating and maintaining her home, her flowers and her yard. There she hosted family and friends with an overabundance of food and laughter.  Once retired, Verna continued volunteering, at Northdale Manor and with Palliative Care where she served to ease the passing of others. She also continued her love of knitting and baking for her family and for World Accord.

Overall, she cared for her family, friends and community and found ways to contribute with a sparkle in her eyes and a spring in her step. A Celebration of her Life will take place in New Liskeard in the spring.
