Sheila Edith Carr (Shaw) passed peacefully on June 12, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Theodore (Ted) Miles Fielder and Gordon (Gord) E. Carr. Daughter of J.L. (Jack) Shaw and Edith Webber. Loving mother of Michael (Susanne) of North Bay, Laural (Jacques) of Toronto, Nancy (Scott) and Robert (Jordy) of Callander. She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Ashley (Harrison), Alex (Mat), Cameron, Sarah (Bryan), Sheridan, and Harrison, and great grandson, Aiden. Dearly loved sister of Gary (Marie) and pre-deceased by Jackie Gray.
At 92, Sheila lived a full and meaningful life in North Bay. She was a Charter Member of the Manitou Chapter IODE. For 50+ years she served the chapter raising funds with her fabulous “hostess-with-the-mostest” event planning activities. These included theme dances, dessert teas, bridge luncheons and theatre bus trips to Toronto. She enjoyed the process of taste-testing and editing chapter member recipes to be published in two fundraising cookbooks.
Sheila taught Home Economics for many years at West Ferris Secondary School sharing her love of food, fashion and hospitality before retiring in 1982. On local TV, she was featured demonstrating the latest gizmo, the microwave oven. Later she operated “Sheila’s Kitchen” from her home and taught special courses for the Department of Education. Her kitchen was often cited as the best restaurant in town.
Gord and Sheila sailed with friends on Lake Nipissing, Lake Michigan and to Florida via the busy Mississippi River. They enjoyed group charter cruises to several Mediterranean destinations. Not shy to embrace local culture she participated in grape stomping at one port of call. After each trip, they concluded the most beautiful place to visit by boat was the French River, right in their own back yard.
Sheila and Ted travelled to many fine destinations sharing tales and photos of their discoveries along the way. Guests at their post-travel dinner parties enjoyed the latest food delights from the cooking schools they attended.
Ted’s interest in genealogy lead to Sheila’s 2007 extended family reunion in Scotland. Photos, laughs and family stories of Olympians, adventurers, curmudgeons, and rascals were exchanged.
Inspired by her snowbird parents, Sheila enjoyed many special winter getaways with her family in Grand Cayman and the Bahamas. Her most memorable was spending Christmas 2007 ocean-side with the family in Exuma. If you’ve ever tried to organize and feed five families from multiple locations at Christmas, it was no small feat—but it was exceptional. The best Christmas gift is wrapped in memories.
Conscious of healthy living, despite her philosophy of “you are what you eat” and “everything in moderation”, Sheila admitted there can never be too much ice cream…or butter. She kept fit with her love of walking in nature, swimming in Lake Nipissing, Thai Chi practice and aqua-fit routines.
Sheila’s gracious manner, loving heart, good humour and clear-sighted words of wisdom were her trademark.

To share more stories and celebrate Sheila’s life, her family is hosting a drop-in Saturday, July 29 at the Harbourside Party Room, 155 Timmins St., North Bay, from 1-4 PM. A private family internment will follow at Callander Union Cemetery.
