Cann, Shirley Ann
Born October 15, 1929 and died August 22, 2023.
It is with a heavy heart that we submit our wonderful mother's obituary. Shirley Ann Cann was born in Montreal on October 15, 1929, to Marie and Ken Clark. She grew up in northern Quebec and always appreciated the beauty of our country. If you asked her what her favourite colour was, the reply was always green like our trees.
She is survived by her two children: Karen Landheer of Ottawa and David Klaehn of Toronto, and by her siblings Bill and Ann Clark of North Bay, Eric Clark of Montreal, and Virginia and Olin Thurston of Edmonton. She had two grandsons Alex and Karl Landheer, and although she lived the farthest, she was the closest to them. As well she will be fondly remembered by her many nephews, nieces and cousins. She is predeceased by her brothers Ken and Fred Clark who both served in World War II in the navy.
She received her education in Montreal and in 1947 she went to the Phillips School of Nursing and graduated in 1950 as a bilingual registered nurse from the Homeopathic Hospital in Montreal. After living briefly in Toronto, she moved to North Bay in 1965 and worked at Johns Manville as an industrial nurse until 1971. Then she worked as a community nurse with the North Bay and District Health Unit from 1972 to 1990.
She was a long-time member of Trinity United Church and she always enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship especially when making hundreds of apple pies in the fall.
Ann served on many committees and boards and worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Callander public library. For her efforts, she was awarded the Senior Volunteer of the Year by the Province of Ontario.
Ann always valued her family and friends, and if you met her or knew her then you know this to be true. She always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. She will be much missed and will be remembered as an exceptional person whose loss leaves a deep wound in the hearts of her family and friends.
Ann will be cremated and her ashes will be interred in the family gravesite in North Bay. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a local food bank or charity of your choice. Vade in Pace.
