Butler, Elizabeth ‘Liz’

Posted

The family of Liz Butler is saddened to announce her death at North Bay Regional Health Centre on February 19, 2014 at the age of 82. Dear mother of Kate Anderson (Craig) of North Bay, Terence Butler (Lucy) and Maura Archer (Bill) of Bowmanville. Loving Grandma of Brodie, Stephen, Jesse, Amy (Mike), Rebekah, Veronica, Chris (Krystle) and Kyle. Proud Great Grandma of Scarlett Mae, Makai and Rhyse. Predeceased by a daughter Glynis and former husband David Butler. Liz was born in Finaghy, Belfast, Northern Ireland to the late Robert and Molly Johnston. She was a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (piano) and also of the Civil Service Business College. She came to Canada on a working tour, married and made her home in Oshawa. Mum balanced marriage, four children, and a fulfilling work career. She worked variously at a health agency, Legal Aid, operated her own business (Oshawa Secretarial Service) and eventually retired from the Provincial Court (family division). While doing all this she volunteered at her neighborhood park, Home and School association and supported the local New Democratic Party and her own union. Mum especially loved her time at the family cottage in Haliburton. After retirement she settled in North Bay, enjoyed international travel, reading, Tai Chi, fierce games of scrabble and relished the fun and friendship she found in her Red Hats events. A series of strokes and other illnesses kept her closer to home in her later years but she persevered with the wonderful support of PHARA home visitors, Kate and Craig and was able to keep her independence. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, if wished donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Special thanks go to, Dr. Lukomska, NBRHC floor 3C staff, nurse Christine from surgery floor for their kind, compassionate care of Mum and the family. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held in the McGuinty Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday at 11 am. Online condolences can be made at www.mcguintyfuneralhome.com.
