As temperatures dip and snowflakes start to fly, today might be the right time to consider donating your unwanted car to help fight kidney disease. The Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Car Program is the quick and easy way to get rid of your unwanted vehicle.

“November is one of the busiest months for the program,” said Dave Cybulski, Kidney Car Program Coordinator. The spike in donations often occurs because people don’t want to shovel around the car, and many people appreciate the valuable income tax receipt they receive for their donation.

The Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Car Program is one of the largest car donation programs in Canada. People can call the toll-free number 1.866.788.CARS (2277) or donate their unwanted vehicles online at www.kidneycar.ca . A local auto recycling partner will tow the vehicle for free within 48 hours and donors will receive a charitable tax receipt for their donation –a minimum of $300. Newer models, in road worthy condition may qualify for a significantly larger tax receipt.

“It’s a win-win for The Kidney Foundation and for the donors,” said Cybulski. “We take care of everything for our donors and they are confident their donation has helped patients and their families living with kidney disease.”

There is no cure for kidney disease. Patients are treated either through dialysis, a process by which blood is cleaned through a machine, or transplantation. In Ontario, there are over 1,000 people currently waiting for a kidney transplant, representing approximately two-thirds of the entire organ donation waiting list.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada is the national volunteer organization committed to reducing the burden of kidney disease through funding and stimulating innovative research; providing education and support; promoting access to high quality healthcare; and increasing public awareness and commitment to advancing kidney health and organ donation.
