North Bay, Ontario— Planning is underway for the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s annual Heart Month canvassing campaign. Throughout the month of February—which marks National Heart Month—dedicated Heart & Stroke volunteers brave the cold to canvass door-to-door, or online with colleagues, family and friends. This year in North Bay, the Foundation is looking for Captains to assist with our local campaign; captains aren’t required to fundraise unless they wish but are an essential part of keeping canvassers in their neighbourhood organized and informed. To get involved, contact local coordinator Julia Tignanelli at 705-980-4196 or email [email protected].

“Volunteers truly are the lifeblood of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Every step they take brings a survivor closer to home,” says Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first woman astronaut. Dr. Bondar is also a neurologist and renowned photographer, and has joined the Foundation as the Honorary Chair of Heart Month, lending her time and support to the Foundation’s volunteer and fundraising programs.

Funds raised go directly into the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s mission, including placement of AEDS in our local communities, which can cut fatality rates by up to 90% (there are over 50 AEDs in North Bay); the development of public health tools; resources and support programs for survivors and their families; and, of course, vital heart and stroke research that saves lives across the country.

Every 7 minutes, someone in Canada dies from heart disease or stroke. In 80% of cases, premature heart attacks and strokes are preventable with healthy lifestyle changes. Since its inception in 1952, the Heart & Stroke Foundation has contributed over $1.4 billion to vital heart and stroke research, making them the largest contributor in Canada after the federal government.
