Swerving vehicle attracts police attention

When OPP got three separate complaints of a vehicle "swerving all over the road" yesterday on Highway 17 W, they quickly found the vehicle near Markstay-Warren and pulled it over.

The vehicle had been travelling westbound when officers stopped it around 3 p.m. near Sutcliffe Road. and 17.

Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined he was impaired and was arrested.  

Officers seized a quantity of drugs suspected to be Fentanyl.   

The driver, Marlon Carelse-Brown, 30, from Barrie, is charged with:  

  •  Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  •  Possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin)
  •  Dangerous operation
  •  Driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available

The passenger, Aletta Dawkins, 28, also from Barrie, is charged with:  

  • Possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin)

Both were released by way of an undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 22, in Sudbury.  

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.  

This charge marks the 24th driver charged under Criminal Impaired Driving Laws in the Nipissing West Detachment area in 2020.
