Fiery fiddles and world rhythms take you on a Christmas Caravan with the Sultans of String and the North Bay Symphony

The North Bay Symphony celebrates holiday traditions around the world in a concert featuring Canada’s ambassadors of world music and 3-time JUNO nominees the Sultans of String.  “Christmas Caravan” begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, at the Capitol Centre in North Bay.

North Bay audiences have been eagerly awaiting the return of the Sultans of String, and they won’t be disappointed says a news release from the NBSO. From fiery fiddle tunes to a Caribbean sleigh ride, this holiday fiesta includes Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring, The Huron Carol, Little Drummer Boy, a Feliz Navidad ska party, Charlie Brown Christmas, and even a rhumba-flamenca fueled Jingle Bells.

The inspiration behind the performance, the Christmas Caravan CD was released in October, 2017, the same month it leapt to #6 in the World Music Billboard Chart and earned a great 4-star review from Downbeat Magazine: “The Canadian band the Sultans of String keeps imaginative imperatives in overdrive for the entirety of ‘Christmas Caravan,’ a generous pitch for global unity through the music of Christmas, Kwanza, and Hanukkah.”  This holiday season the Sultans will be entertaining audiences across Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan on a 15-concert tour that includes this North Bay performance with live symphony orchestra.

Three-time JUNO Award nominees and Billboard charting band Sultans of String creates “Energetic and exciting music from a band with talent to burn!” according to Maverick Magazine. Thrilling their audiences with their genre-hopping passport of Celtic reels, flamenco, gypsy-jazz, Arabic, Cuban and South Asian rhythms, the group celebrates musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity. The Sultans include musicians Chris McKhool, violin; Kevin Laliberte, guitar; Eddie Patton, guitar; Drew Birston, bass; Rosendo Chendy Leon, percussion; and guest vocalist Rebecca Campbell.

“Celebrating the holidays is a great time to enjoy music, friends, and family,” stated NBSO President Carol Jodouin.  “It is also a time to support those in our community in need and this year we are inviting and encouraging our audience members to bring a donation of new Child, Youth, or Adult pyjamas with them to our performance to support patients in care, or who have arrived in crisis, at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
