Canadore College is hosting its Convocation Ceremonies for the Schools of Business and Management; Community, Justice and Police Studies; Culinary Arts; Language, Access and Preparatory Studies; Media, Design and Dramatic Arts; and Sport and Recreation on June 2.

Guest speaker Jim Rankin, reporter-photographer at the Toronto Star, will be speaking to approximately 370 graduates.

Rankin specializes in investigations, features and data journalism.

He’s covered the murder trials of Paul Bernardo, Karla Homolka and Russell Williams, the ice storm in Eastern Ontario and Québec, floods in the Saguenay, crime in the Caribbean and a couple of failed Toronto Maple Leaf playoff runs. He has investigated international adoption practices, high cost payday lenders, unscrupulous immigration consultants, the costs of impaired driving, the wisdom of mandatory jail sentences for more crimes and Ontario’s antiquated child protection system. He also reported on the Arab Spring from Tunisia, Libya and Yemen.

His work has been nominated for nine National Newspaper Awards and in 2002 he was part of a team involved in the Michener Award-winning investigative series into race, policing and crime in Toronto. In 2014, he was honoured with a Harry Jerome award for public advocacy. His photography and multimedia work has been recognized by the U.S. National Press Photographers Association, Society for News Design, News Photographers Association of Canada and the U.S. Online Journalism Awards.

Born in North Bay, Ont., Rankin has degrees in biology (University of Western Ontario) and journalism (University of King’s College, Halifax). He also studied photography at Ryerson University. Before joining the Star in 1994, he worked at the North Bay Nugget, London Free Press and New Brunswick Telegraph Journal.

He is most proud of being named to North Bay's Walk of Fame and currently lives in Toronto with his partner Michelle Shephard, an author and documentary filmmaker who is also a journalist at the Toronto Star.
