Spike Ball a hit at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall

It's similar to two on two volleyball, but instead of hitting a ball over a net, players hit the ball onto a round 'trampoline' net to return the ball to the other team.

Students at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall participated in Try Day Wednesday, learning to play an increasingly popular sport, Spike Ball.

Try Day is a program provided by the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) and the Ministry of Education, Government of Ontario which encourages students to learn a new sport and teach it to their peers.

This year, students at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall learned Spike Ball, which is described as similar to two on two volleyball, but instead of hitting a ball over a net, players hit the ball on to a round 'trampoline' net to return the ball to the other team.

“This is really a great opportunity for our students,” says David Wilkinson, Physical Education teacher at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall. “Today we saw students challenging themselves, learning from their peers and having the chance to play a sport they would otherwise not have the opportunity to play,” he says.

Try Day has been introduced in schools across Ontario, challenging students to learn new skills and participate in activities promoting growth, critical thinking and athletic abilities. Having students teach the sport peer to peer not only promotes athletic leadership, but has also been shown to create a commitment to and passion for new sports.
