When you think of robotics, do you think of men focused on the world of science fiction working in back rooms to put super-human mechanical creatures together to perform mundane duties?

Think again.  Several times a week, males and females from grades 9 through 12, from four different area school boards, meet as part of FIRST Team 1305.  The meetings revolve around robotics, but it’s much more than that – its community outreach, business strategy, leadership, artistic endeavors, strategic writing, and yes, building a very cool robot.

Kenna Tisseur, a grade 12 Widdifield Secondary student has been on the team for two years.  Prior to joining Team 1305, Kenna had ambitions to use her athletic abilities and become a professional dancer.  This fall, Kenna is hoping to attend Algonquin College in their electrical engineering technology program. “Without robotics, I wouldn't have had the aspiration to pursue the field of engineering.  It has opened up doors for me that I never would have imagined.  And the best part is, I’ve made some of my closest friends,” said Kenna.

What is FIRST?  It stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST teams believe in gracious professionalism – producing high quality work while emphasizing the value of others and respecting individuals and their community.  FIRST is about enjoying competition while respecting and helping the people you compete with.

William Fraser, a grade 10 Chippewa Secondary School student started doing robotics in grade 4 while at Vincent Massey Public School.  A graduate of FIRST Lego League Robotics, William is now in his 7th year participating on the team.  “Team 1305 has given me confidence to speak in front of people – big and small crowds.  I keep busy, participating in my high school band, swimming for North Bay Y Titans and taking drumming lessons every week.  But, the highlight of my week is going to robotics,” said William.

Students from any school are welcome to join FIRST Team 1305 at any point throughout the year. The team is community-based and maintains a positive partnership with the Near North District School Board.  The team is inspired by community-minded sponsors such as Professional Engineers of Ontario and Canadore College

Jessica Kelso, a grade 10 student at West Ferris Secondary School and the team’s Business Manager dreams of one day studying business and working in the film industry.  “Team 1305 has taught me how to manage a very large project.  I work with a group of really enthusiastic youth and have had the opportunity to meet with community leaders, including the Mayor, MPP, MP and business executives.  It’s an awesome place to spend time,” said Jessica.

Nicolas Gacitua, a grade 12 student at St. Joseph's Scollard Hall has being on the team for two years.  "I like the energy of the team.  It's really cool to create a robot from start to finish," said Nico who is currently applying for a First Team 1305 scholarship which he hopes will support him over the next four years as he works towards a Mechatronics Engineering degree at the University of Ontario Institute for Technology in Oshawa.

Interested in learning more?  Team Captain Benjamin Reevie, a grade 12 student says, “Come to our season kick-off on Saturday January 9 at Nipissing University. The team will be on hand to answer questions and welcome anyone who is interested in joining.  On January 6, we will also be hosting a FIRST Lego League Junior open house (for kids aged 6 to 9) at the North Bay Public Library.  All of these events are great ways to learn more and get the information you need to enjoy a fantastic team,” said Ben.

FACTS:

  • Team 1305 is a veteran team, having existed for 16 years in North Bay.

  • In November 2015, an inaugural FIRST Lego League Qualifying Event was held in North Bay where teams from North Bay and surrounding area competed for a chance to participate in the provincial competition which will be held in Oshawa in January.  Each of the 11 teams was mentored by a FIRST Team 1305 member.

  • A FIRST North Bay Robotics Regional will be held at Nipissing University from March 23-26, 2016.  Forty teams from across Canada will compete for a coveted spot at the World Robotic Competition to be held in St. Louis Missouri in April 2015.  The event is open to the public and is an exciting day for the whole family.
